The Ford-McDonnell Wedding

On July 13, 1940, two of Irish America’s most powerful families – the Fords and the McDonnells – were joined through marriage.  Henry Ford II, grandson of the fabled automaker Henry Ford, was to marry Anne McDonnell, daughter of Wall Street rainmaker James Francis McDonnell.  No expense would be spared in an event that came as close to a royal wedding as 20th century America would ever get.  As Stephen Birmingham wrote in his classic, Real Lace, “If it was not the wedding of the century, it certainly was the last of the great weddings in America before World War II.”
The father of the bride, James Francis McDonnell, was the son of a Famine refugee named Peter McDonnell who hailed from County Longford and arrived in New York around 1850.  The elder McDonnell turned out to be one of the fortunate ones of his generation.  He established a successful business and sent his son James Francis to Fordham.  By then the McDonnell’s were among the many thousands of Irish Americans — known disparagingly to their working-class counterparts as “lace curtain” – who were determinedly clawing their way into middle-class respectability.  When young James Francis graduated from Fordham in 1900, he headed for Wall Street.
By 1916, now a millionaire, McDonnell had his own major merger wedding.  But in that era, his marriage to Anna Murray of Brooklyn, daughter of Irish American tycoon Thomas E. Murray, commanded headlines only in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.  Still, there was no denying that he’d just become a member of the FIF’s – “first Irish families.”
The Murray family into which James Francis had just married had come into its fortune by virtue of the genius of Thomas E. Murray, Sr.  He had only a few years of formal education, but was born with ambition and an extraordinary gift for mechanical invention.  A job at an electrical power company in Albany, NY led eventually to a career as one of the nation’s foremost experts in electricity and an irrepressible inventor of new machinery and parts for electrical generators.  By the time of his death, he’d registered over 1,100 patents (second only to Thomas Edison) and amassed a fortune.
James Francis McDonnell grew even more wealthy in the years following his marriage.  He and Anna built a mansion in New York and another out on Long Island at Southampton.  They also had fourteen children.
The source of Henry Ford II’s fortune needs little explanation.  He, too, was the descendant of an immigrant who fled Ireland during the Famine.  I great grandfather had settled on a farm outside Detroit.  His son, Henry, hated farming and loved mechanical things, so he headed for Detroit. There, like Thomas E. Murray, Sr., he found work as an engineer with an electric power company.  But his fascination with automobiles led him to quit and found the Ford Motor Company in 1903.  The rest, as they say, is history.
And so when it was announced to the press that the grandson of Henry Ford and granddaughter of Thomas E. Murray, Sr. were engaged to be married in the summer of 1940, it became THE story, a welcome distraction from the winds of war across the Atlantic.   For weeks leading up to the event, the press covered it like a royal wedding, devoting miles of column space to every detail of the preparations.  One of the biggest pre-wedding stories was the announcement that Henry Ford II would convert (or re-convert, as some Catholics with an eye toward history liked to point out) to Catholicism so that the wedding could take place with the full blessing of the Catholic Church.
The event took place in Southampton and more than eleven hundred of America’s most powerful and influential people – FIFs and non-FIFs alike — were invited.  Hundreds more curious onlookers stood on the sidelines trying to catch a glimpse of the new couple.  None other than Monsignor Fulton Sheen, the charismatic radio priest, performed the ceremony and in typical dramatic fashion, declared the marriage “unbreakable” (he was wrong).  The reception, on the lawn of the family estate, was a gala affair for the record books.
Unlike the James Francis McDonnell–Anna Murray wedding of 1916, this one made headlines everywhere.  A photograph of the elderly Henry Ford dancing with his new granddaughter–in-law was published in papers around the world.
What accounts for all this attention is not simply the money involved, but the fact that Irish Catholics in 1940 were beginning to enjoy an increasingly positive image in American society.  To cite just one example, Hollywood had begun to make movies that starred hero priests and patriotic Irishmen – from Boys Town (1938) and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), to Going My Way (1944), The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945) and Fighting Father Dunne (1948).  Of course, Al Smith’s presidential election campaign only twelve years earlier (and Kennedy’s campaign 20 years later) showed that not everyone was convinced. Still, the times were clearly changing.  Once seen as subversive and dangerous, the Irish were now more and more at home in America.
But the money did help, too, and the FIFs – the Kennedys, Murrays, Cuddahys, McDonnells, Farrells, and Smiths – reveled in the moment.  For if the new image of the Irish in popular culture told America that Irish Americans were wholesome, respectable, and patriotic, the McDonnell-Ford wedding announced that they were also rich and powerful.

George M. Cohan Pens WWI Soundtrack

On April 7, 1917, George M. Cohan scribbled fast and furious.  Ever since he’d awoken that morning to discover that Congress had declared war on Germany, he’d been hard at work on a patriotic song.  By the early afternoon the fa med song and dance man had composed another hit – “Over There” – and America had a war anthem.
George Michael Cohan was already famous by 1917.  Born in 1878 in Providence, Rhode Island to parents who performed on the vaudeville circuit, he was only weeks old when he made his first appearance on stage.  Not long after he learned to  walk, Cohan joined the act that soon became known as “The Four Cohans” (including his older sister and parents).   By the 1890s they were nationally famous and commanded top billing and fees.  Young George proved a natural on stage and with the pen.  He was only 16 when he published his first song.
By the turn of the century he was writing, producing, and starring in his own musicals.  But none did very well until Cohan formed a partnership with Sam Harris.  Their first musical, “Little Johnny Jones,” opened in late 1904 and became a smash.  It featured two hit songs “Give My Regards to Broadway” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”  More hits followed, including ‘Forty Five Minutes From Broadway’ in 1906 (from the play of the same name) and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” (from the show “George Washington, Jr.”).  By 1911, the Cohan-Harris partnership was by far the most successful on Broadway.  In that year alone they had no fewer than six hit shows and owned controlling interests in seven theaters.
Cohan’s flag-waving hits made him rich and famous.  They also helped identify Irish Americans as an intensely patriotic lot.  The Irish in America were rising fast economically, socially, and politically at the turn of the century and the result was, in the words of historian William V. Shannon, a “more than life-size patriotism.”   Many non-Irish Americans might not have considered the Irish their equals, but they did admire their Americanism in an era marked by a huge influx of newer and stranger peoples from places like Italy and Russia.
Of course, this robust patriotism was not the same as jingoism.  Indeed, when World War I broke out in 1914, many Irish Americans voiced loud opposition to any U.S. intervention.  This stance reflected both an adherence to longstanding and widely shared American isolationist principles and a commitment to Irish nationalism.  The more the Kaiser took it to the British, the better the chances for Irish independence.  The failed Easter Rising of 1916 and subsequent summary execution of the leaders by the British only intensified Irish American hostility to the idea of an Anglo-American alliance.  And the American Irish were not alone in this view.  President Woodrow Wilson won re-election in 1916 on the slogan, “He Kept Us Out of War.”
Nonetheless, once the same Woodrow Wilson announced that America would join the Allies in a fight to “make the world safe for democracy,” Irish Americans (and Americans in general) threw their support behind the war effort.  Tens of thousands joined the armed forces and several became well-known heroes – Medal of Honor winner William Donovan and Fr. Francis Duffy, “the fighting priest.”
Fueling their enthusiasm and that of the nation at large was Cohan’s rousing call to arms.  It came to him in less than an hour while traveling by train from his home on Long Island to Manhattan.  “I read the war headlines and I got to thinking and humming to myself ,” he later remembered.  “Soon I was all finished with the chorus and the verse, and by the time I got to town I had a title.”
Cohan published the song immediately and days later singer Charles King helped popularize “Over There” when he delivered a stirring rendition at a Red Cross fundraiser in New York.  Soon thereafter singer Nora Bayes made a recording that marched right to the top of the charts and stayed there for seventeen weeks.  Stores found it impossible to keep their shelves stocked with recordings or sheet music.  In contrast, no one seemed much interested anymore in that popular song of 1915, “I Didn’t Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier.”
“Over there” helped to get five million Americans into uniform and countless more to fill factories, sell Liberty Bonds, and volunteer at the Red Cross. The American Expeditionary Force under Gen. John Pershing eventually arrived in Europe and helped tip the balance in favor of the Allies over the Central Powers and bring “the war to end all wars” to an end by November 1918.
Cohan continued to write songs, manage his theaters, and perform in musicals, but his star began to fade in the late 1920s.  He enjoyed a revival of sorts in the 1930s as a performer and even landed the lead in “Ah, Wilderness,” the only comedy written by that other Irish American icon of the stage, Eugene O’Neill.  In 1940, with war once again raging in Europe, Congress awarded Cohan a gold medal (NOT the Congressional Medal of Honor as is often said) for his patriotic songs.  Cohan died in 1942, but not before seeing James Cagney star in the film tribute to his career, “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”  According to his friends, he loved ever flag-waving minute of it.

Ifacably Irish
Colin Worley (2008)
The subtitle of this wonderful album is “Fun for the Practice Run” and it lives up to its name!  Colin Worley plays keyboard with a bright and brassy tone, accompanied by a well-integrated drum track.  He also composed or arranged all the tracks except the six trad sets, and his tunes are as excellent as his playing.  The two arranged tracks show his imagination and versatility.  One, a treble jig, starts with Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and progresses to an adaptation of Pachebel’s “Canon”.  The other, a hornpipe, starts with a hint of “Waltzing Matilda” and trips on down the yellow brick road with the song from “Wizard of Oz.”  If you’re looking for music that’s fun as well as strict in its timing, you’ve found it.
Colin Worley says on the cover that this music is for advanced dancers and the track list bears him out.  There are two reels, two slip jigs, a single jig, two slow treble jigs and three hornpipes as well as the set dances, “St. Patrick’s Day,” “Blackbird,” “Garden of Daisies,” “Job of Journeywork,” “Three Sea Captains” and “King of the Fairies.”  It’s a pleasure to find a single jig on this and other new albums (they were often omitted from the oldest albums) especially one as enjoyable as the cascading notes of this one make it.  Highly recommended!

Feisworld Volume 2
Stephen Walker (2008)
This fine album is a worthy continuation of the well-regarded first volume.  Walker plays keyboard with a bright, brassy sound accompanied by a significant drum track.  Although some dancers compare this style to the calliope used for circus music, many appreciate the freshness of this treatment.  Many of the tunes, including a complete track of reels and another of slip jigs, are his own compositions and very fine.  Walker has expanded his musical offerings on this album to include a single jig (mistakenly labeled as the fourth slip jig track) and a light jig.  The light jig track takes some listening to: although it’s unmistakably in double jig format, his style mellows it and smooths out the bounce which is characteristic of light jigs.  Great for when you want something different but unexpected in what may be the most traditional of the dances.
Feisworld V2 includes four tracks of reels, three of slip jigs, three of slow heavy jigs and three of slow hornpipes, confirming its aim at the advanced dancer.

North American Senior Belt Irish Dance Championship is one the oldest and the most prestigious National Irish dancing competition in North America.

Jonathon Srour’s is a senior year Grove City Ollege studying biology with the interest of possibly becoming a doctor. Since going to school Jonathon rarely competes but dances often, returning to his school occasionally for a class to brush up.

This is Jonathon Srour’s second consecutive year winning the Senior Belt that is comprised of competitors from all over North America, boys and girls, who have won at least 1 open championship in that calendar year.  The annual competition was held at the Etobicoke Feis outside of Toronto, Canada on June 13, 2009.
Inscribed on the belt are the winners of the last 50 years, dating back to1957. Included among the elite dancers is Jonathon’s teacher, Kevin Broesler, ADCRG.  Although Mr. Broesler has produced numerous champions, Jonathon was his first student to win a North American Belt.  Not only once but twice in consecutive years. Jonathon joins a club of only 4 others who have won this competition in 2 consecutive years. Reagan Wick, Roger Casey, Mary Ann Shea, and Colleen Griffith.

Prior to winning the Belt Jonathon placed 6th in the Senior Men at the Irish Dancing World Championships in Philadelphia. Shortly after the World’s He was contacted by management of Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and asked to fill a spot with Troupe 2 that was touring the United States.

It was a complicate decision for the young dancer as he was near completion of his semester studies and had to get permission from the Dean of Grover City College to postpone his final exams so he could engage the tour. Jonathon was granted permission and danced with the troupe through the end of May.

The talent is of the Srour family is not limited to Jontathon. The Irish Blessing is a n Irish band that includes his brother, Joshua, on fiddle and dancing, mother, Cushla, on piano and flute, and father, James on whistles and percussion and Jonathon on flute. The family has qualifying for the All-Ireland Fleadh on each person’s respective instruments in both solo competitions and a trio.  They will compete in Tullamore, County Offaly in August.

BOSTON’S FENWAY PARK

AN IRISH-AMERICAN LANDMARK

Fenway Park – home of the Boston Red Sox – is the nation’s enduring symbol of baseball, America’s favorite pastime. Officially opened on April 20, 1912, the park has outlasted all other major league baseball parks, becoming a shrine for baseball lovers everywhere.
Writing in the New Yorker Magazine in 1960, John Updike described Fenway Park as “a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg.”
The contractor who built this lyrical ballpark was Irish immigrant Charles E. Logue (1858-1919), one of Boston’s renowned builders of Irish descent. Logue (top picture) arrived from Co. Derry in 1881 at age 23, and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled carpenter and ambitious young man.
Logue’s timing was perfect when he formed the Charles Logue Building Company in 1890. The Boston Irish had finally begun to wrestle control of the city from the recalcitrant Yankees with the election of Hugh O’Brien, Boston’s first mayor, in 1884.
According to Boston historian Dennis Ryan, Charles Logue became major contractor in the Irish community, building Boston College’s campus as well as churches for the Boston Archdiocese. Mayor Patrick Collins appointed Logue to the Schoolhouse Committee in 1904, citing the need for a practical builder, and Mayor John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, relied on Logue to build a “busier, better Boston.”

But Fenway Park would become Logue’s enduring landmark.

Ground was broken for the park in September1911, and the stadium was finished the following spring, a considerable achievement given the harsh New England winters.
According to the Boston Red Sox web site, the official opening took place April 20, 1912: “The Red Sox defeated the New York Highlanders — later known as the Yankees — before 27,000 fans, 7-6 in 11 innings. The event would have made front page news had it not been for the sinking of the Titanic only a few days before.”
Fenway remained an Irish gathering place for years to come, when there wasn’t a baseball game scheduled. On June 29, 1919, for example, Irish leader Eamon deValera held a Freedom Rally at Fenway Park that attracted nearly 60,000 people, spilling onto the infield. (bottom picture.)
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) also played at Fenway over the years. On June 6, 1937 All-Ireland Football Champions from County Mayo defeated the Massachusetts team, 17 to 8. And on November 8, 1954, the All-Ireland hurling champions County Cork beat an American line-up, 37 to 28.

Today the legacy of Charles Logue remains intact. Red Sox president Larry Lucchino has a framed photograph of Charles Logue in his office, “for a little inspiration,” according to the Providence Journal.

And Boston’s Irish Heritage Trail, which depicts the city’s 300 years of Irish history, is planning to add Fenway Park as an Irish Landmark in its forthcoming walking map this summer, joining the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Irish Famine Memorial, and other local landmarks.
Logue’s descendants have also remained a presence in the area, thanks to Logue Engineering Company, Inc. in Hingham. According to its web site, Charles remained president of the company until his death in 1919. His son, A. Emmett Logue and grandson, A. Emmet Logue, Jr. ran the company until 1972. Great grandson Jim Logue started Logue Engineering in 1975, and his son Kevin, is now the fifth generation of Logues in the family business.
“We are very proud to have him as a part of our family and everyone is always interested to hear of our connection with Fenway Park,” Kevin Logue said.
Indeed, Bostonians everywhere are proud of his sturdy stadium that has outlasted all other major league parks in the nation. To Charles Logue and his family from everyone who loves baseball – well done!

Hurling

January 8, 2010 by Thomas Miner

Is this 1,000-year-old Irish favorite just too tough for international play?

Many an Irish sports fan of Irish football or hurling may smile when hearing these late coming games termed “extreme.” Hurling, a game that traces its roots to before the birth of Christ, has for centuries past made tougher men out of Irish farm lads than all the playing fields of Eton and American football programs. It is likely that the sedate sport of curling took the spotlight at the past Winter Olympics because hurling, centered largely in Ireland, does not have a large enough audience for its extreme action to get a spot among the international rings.
Most likely the game of hurling moved with the nomadic Celts to Ireland around 600 B.C. Hurling is an ancient game that is the model for most Celtic sports, including camogie, a female version, Gaelic football and modern hurling.
Irish legends mention hurling in keeping with its battlefield similarities the ancient game was extremely violent and turned to little wars as hurling became ingrained in Irish culture. In an attempt to keep Norman English invaders from picking up Irish ways hurling was banned in the 14th century but the games was still played and remained popular.
A 16th century a hurling ban almost eliminated the game for good. But in its place the Irish began to play Gaelic Football, a violent form of soccer.
Hurling wasn’t revived until the 18th century. Organized games in leagues were. Landlords supported teams and players followed strict rules on the field, The Great Famine cut short the renewed popularity of hurling until the 19th century and the start of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in 1884 which elevated hurling to the national sport of Ireland. The GAA organized leagues, and codified rules. The first Senior Hurling Final was in 1887.
A simple description of the game and its rules is offered by the GAA. Hurling is a game similar to field hockey, in that it is played with a small ball and a curved wooden stick. The stick, or “hurley” (called “caman” in Irish) is curved outwards at the end, to provide the striking surface. The ball or “sliothar” is similar in size to a hockey ball but has raised ridges.
Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 137 meters long and 82 meters wide. The goalposts are the same shape as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one.

A player may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, a player may pick up the ball with the hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. After those steps a player may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice.
To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley. To score, you put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net by the hurley for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points. Physical contact is allowed, shoulder to shoulder.
Each team consists of fifteen players, —- one goalkeeper, three full-backs, three half-backs, two midfielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards. The actual line out on the playing field looks like the illustration below.

Goalkeeper

Left corner-back    Full-back    Right corner-back
Left half-back    Center half-back    Right half-back

Midfielder    Midfielder

Left half-forward    Center half-forward    Right half-forward
Left corner-forward    Full-forward    Right corner-forward

Players wear a jersey with their team colors and number on the back. Teams must have different color jerseys. The goalkeepers’ jerseys must not be similar to the jersey of any other player. Referees wear black jerseys, socks and togs. Officials for a game are a referee, two linesmen (to indicate when the ball leaves the field of play at the side and to mark ‘65’’ free kicks and four umpires (to signal scores, assist the referee in controlling the games, and to assist linesmen in positioning ‘’65’ frees).
Goalkeepers may not be physically challenged while inside their own goal area, but players can harass them into playing a bad pass, or block an attempted pass. Teams are allowed a maximum of three substitutes in a game. Players may switch positions on the field of play as much as they wish but this is usually on the instructions of team officials.
A goal is signaled by raising a green flag, placed to the left of the goal area. A point is signaled by raising a white flag, placed to the right of goal. A ‘45’/’65’ is signaled by the umpire raising his outside arm. A ‘square ball’, when a player scores having arrived in the ‘square’ prior to receiving the ball, is signaled by pointing at the goal area.

Ireland’s Horseracing

January 8, 2010 by Thomas Miner

Gone are the days of a simple gathering of farmers and horse enthusiasts to wager on their best horses as depicted on the painting of our cover. Horseracing is big business for breeders, trainers and gamblers.

In a nation where the most valuable possession is the land, the next priority would be  Ireland’s classic racehorses. The Irish love affair with racing abounds with three hundred race meets at twenty-seven tracks. Non-stop racing from March to October rivals all other sporting events. Horseracing even competes in the financial industry.
Horse breeding, training and racing is as significant an economic activity as gambling. Ireland’s breeding stables are among Europe’s finest and are sought after by royalty and racing enthusiasts around the world. Exceptional horses win millions and make millions more providing stud services. Less publicity is given to brood mares, a considerable market as well. With this in mind, breeders are able to breed horses that excel at particular distances or racing styles. America is most famous for thoroughbred racing and the Triple Crown, while harness racing is more popular in Canada and Australia, not to mention the excitement in jumping and the steeplechase more popular in Europe.

Let’s look at some historical tracks that figure in the glamour and excitement of Irish horseracing. The home of historic racing is the Curragh course. The ancient Gaelic name Curragh actually means racecourse and in the earliest Irish manuscripts, the Curragh figured as a place of sport for Celtic kings and their people. In the 17th century, the Curragh became a sporting resort of Ireland’s chief governors and administrators. Every summer, Dublin’s Castle lord lieutenant and entourage came to Kildare to watch or compete in racing at the Curragh. The number of King’s Plates varied over two centuries from 1700, though the vast majority of them were contested. The Curragh became the social center and administrative headquarters of racing during that time.
By 18th century’s end, lodges and stables of prominent owners, breeders and trainers surrounded the Curragh. These lodgings survive in the hands of today’s equally illustrious racing community. The first Irish Derby took place at the Curragh in 1866. This famous Classic has a legendary reputation for bringing out the best and ranks as Ireland’s premier sporting and social event.
Racing characters add atmosphere to Derby Day for the fact that you can rub shoulders with the global social elite. Sheiks from Dubai, international sporting personalities, film and TV stars mix freely with the crowds. The Irish Derby boasts a three day festival starting on a Friday, with the first of seven races at 6pm. A free concert set on a giant stage entertains after the races.
Derby Day, the air of Kildare is a carnival of entertainers performing throughout the afternoon. Saturday racing begins with the Pretty Polly Stakes, Europe’s top fillies who compete for record prize money and the Betfair Curragh Cup. No doubt a tenor sings “the Curragh of Kildare” in the main grandstand before the million-euro Derby. The pageantry spectacle is a fantastic annual party.
The exclusive Champagne Bar and Bistro and the highly acclaimed Horseshoe Restaurant are popular meeting places. The Vintage Crop and Horace Pink bars and plenty of other restaurants located throughout the enclosure provide a meeting place for friends. Want to do Derby Day in style? Gather a group and book a Hospitality Pavilion on the infield racecourse close to the action. The packages include: VIP admission, champagne reception on arrival, silver service lunch with wines, afternoon tea and complimentary bar throughout the day. Further down the enclosure is the huge ‘West End Party Zone’ marquee. Here you can drink, eat, place bets, and dance to live music while watching the whole racing scene on T.V. screens.
In March 1840, a group of gentlemen organized a race in Kilbeggan for a Challenge Cup valued at forty guineas with ten pounds added by the stewards. Between 1840 and 1855, racing was held in several locations around town including the present site. Competitions revived in 1879 when the first official meeting was held in a Ballard field. The Locke family, owners of a distillery that is still in operation, contributed the place. Racing continued there until 1885. In 1901, the races were revived again at the present location in Loughnagore and continued every year except during WWII.
Strange stories span Kilbeggan’s racing history the past 160 years. Tales of a local horse who won the 1916 Irish Grand National then had to walk home because of the Easter Rising; a House of Commons telegram that saved the 1917 races; Prince Aly Khan’s victory on his unpronounceable Ynys in 1953; the horse that drowned during a race; and numerous more. However, an amazing account states how the Kilbeggan has gone from the crisis of the 1960’s to being the most successful meeting in Ireland outside the festival races. The Kilbeggan formula mixes the exhibition of races and jumps with the relaxed laid back charm of genuine rural meetings where fun, friendship and atmosphere are main components. One reporter in 1840 wrote, “On every side was to be seen happy hearts, smiling countenances and sparkling eyes.” In that sense, very little has changed in over century and a half.
Two things happened in the 1970’s toward Kilbeggan’s success. The major change was the switch to all National Hunt Racing in 1971 and in 1973 the first sponsored races were held. From that time, progress culminated in the 1990 opening of a new complex together with the purchase of racecourse lands. Wining the Racecourse of the Year Award the same year helped seal Kilbeggan’s future.
In recent years, improvements beyond the new complex (with restaurants, bars, sponsor rooms and offices) comprise: surfacing the concourse area, enclosure extensions, developing a site for a tented village, developing and widening the track to cater larger fields and additional race meetings, plus opening the pavilion in 1999 at a cost of one million pounds.
The number of race meetings since 1992 has increased from three to six each year and attendance doubled from 24,000 in 1995 to 50,000 in 2000. The races experienced explosive growth in sponsorship with the business community contributing 130,000 in 2000. The most significant sponsorship to date is the Elan Midlands National that commenced in July 1997 adding a sense of occasion to the meetings. In true Hollywood style, Christy’s Picnic, which included director Neil Jordan and actor Stephen Rea among his owners, won the race.

John McGraw

John McGraw was born in 1873 in Truxton, NY. His father was an Irish native, who, soon after crossing the Atlantic, fought on the Union side in the Civil War. Destitute, the post-war immigrant had wandered in search of work, eventually settling in upstate New York, where he married Ellen Comerfort and started a family.
The McGraws were rather unprivileged; children kept multiplying, as income stagnated. In time, acquiring the barest of essentials became a formidable task. This problem met a grim resolution in 1884, when fever struck the household; in the span of two months, young McGraw’s mother and four siblings had perished.
Such ill fortune made McGraw’s father quite belligerent. The hostility reached a point where the twelve-year-old left home, finding refuge in the nearby house of Mary Goddard, who agreed to take care of him. In this improved situation, the boy was better able to pursue his true passion – Baseball.
In spite of a rather small stature, McGraw emerged as the standout player on his school team. By age sixteen, he was excelling on the local adult team. One week before his seventeenth birthday, he signed a minor league contract. However, his debut was a catastrophic failure, which showcased a whopping seven errors at what was supposed to be third base.
McGraw was released, given seventy dollars, and wished the best of luck. Mortified by the prospect of going home in defeat, he embarked on a quest for a second chance. Redemption came when he joined a “ragtag group of players” in Gainesville, Florida; this ramshackle crew, dubbed the “Champions of Florida,” convinced the major league Cleveland Spiders to face them in a game.
The major league team won, but McGraw ripped three doubles off legendary pitching ace Cy Young; this high-profile display of hitting prowess launched an instant and meteoric career rise. Still eighteen years old, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles and made his major league debut in August 1891.
Gone were those days of seven errors; McGraw had developed into an adept third-baseman. More impressive was his offensive production, aided by a hawk-eye which could distinguish strikes from balls as well as any hitter in the league. Though his performance would decline in later years, his career stats boasted a Cooperstown-caliber .334 batting average and an impossible .466 on-base percentage – good for third place behind Ted Williams and Babe Ruth.
In spite of this highly-successful playing career, McGraw is even more prominently remembered as a manager. After all, he managed for over three decades, amassing ten pennants, three World Series titles, and the second-highest win total of any manager in the game’s history.
However, the McGraw legacy was not staked on sheer triumph; it was also about how he triumphed. He was described by writer Jeff Silverman as, “one of the most colorful, fiery, and pugnacious men ever to wear a uniform.” As a manager, his mark of 131 ejections stood for seven decades. As a player, he would obstruct a base-runner in any conceivable way.
In spite of his fierce demeanor and Machiavellian tactics, McGraw had an open-minded side. He spearheaded the bold, ultimately unsuccessful, move to sign Native American icon Jim Thorpe. Also, following McGraw’s death at age sixty, his widow uncovered a list of all the African-American players her husband had desired to sign, but, due to institutional bigotry, was unable to do so.
A decade prior to retirement, McGraw released his memoir, My Thirty Years in Baseball. Though some viewed the fractious man’s book as disappointingly tame, others held that McGraw’s ‘Thirty Years’ offered an endearing amount of nostalgic charm.
