Just who I’m s’posed to be,
I guess it’s very hard for you
To watch this change in me;
Pilates! More Than Exercise

Facing the bar, or some other stable service, put your right leg out straight. Pull up the muscles on your standing leg to keep it stable. You will notice in this picture that the body is upright and there isn’t any curl in the pelvis or rounding of the spine. If you put your leg out in front and the pelvis curls under or the body leans too far back in order to counter balance, then you must lower the leg a bit. You can do this by putting your foot on a chair or stool or a low step. Keeping a level pelvis is the most important part of this exercise. It may be frustrating at first, but in the long run, this will help to truly stretch the posterior structures of the right leg.
Hinge forward at the hip (not rounding the back) in or to begin stretching the posterior musculature of the right leg. These muscles include the gastrocnemius muscle group (calf) and the hamstrings (back of the knee up to the hip). You will notice in this picture that the spine has not changed its position. The hips stay square. Both legs stay engaged and the core stays lifted without moving the spine during this part of the movement. The goal isn’t how far you bend forward, it’s how stable you keep your trunk and pelvis while you stretch your leg. If your body tends to “collapse” during this movement, then make the movement a bit smaller, scoop up the belly and think to yourself, “long, stable spine in order to optimally stretch the legs.”
Using a pole to monitor the position of the spine may be helpful. You may be surprised at how quickly the head may want to just hang forward. You can also help other classmates discover this position, too.
If the spine can remain stable and the hip can stretch further, then you can choose to put the leg on the higher bar. Remember, what matters most is the position of the pelvis.
This lunge movement will help to open the right hip and stretch the front of the left hip and thigh. Notice in the picture how the spine hasn’t changed its position. This lunge movement combines the “hip hinging” with the right knee bending. Again, the brain must think, “long, stable spine helps to stretch the hips.”
STRETCHING HIPS/STABLE SPINE
Begin to scoop the belly up and in as the spine rounds forward. Be attentive to rounding the entire spine, as opposed to just the upper back where the head might just hang forward.
Keep the scoop as the spine rounds a bit more in order to stretch the deep muscles of the spine. Notice in the photo that neither the spine nor the pelvis shifted backwards. This may happen if the body is trying to counterbalance the movement. If this shift does happen, simply make the movement smaller.Repeat the entire series with the left leg on the bar. Then, repeat the entire series two more times, alternating right and left legs. By the third series, you should begin to feel more proficient.
When we work on flexibility we sometimes get caught up in trying to go too far too fast. Just like any other discipline, it takes time and patience to learn new tasks. Creating good habits will carry over. Learning patience is part of the practice. This entire lesson will take less then 15 minutes.
Tapes of this lesson and other Pilates!! More Than Exercise® programs will soon be available at www.pilatesunlimited.com.

The Oireachtas is coming! Yes, it is that time of year again. The time of year when you are dancing nonstop, your teachers’ comments are thrown at you as fast as you are dancing, and the word Oireachtas runs through your head and from your fellow dancer’s mouths every day. Oh, and don’t forget, soon you will be headed off to Orlando, Florida with everything a dancer could possibly need stuffed into suitcases, dance bags, and dress bags. How exciting!
Nevermore. Nevermore.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809, the son of a Scots-Irish actor. There was trouble early on, as Poe’s father abandoned the family and his mother died from consumption. The young orphan was taken in by Scottish merchant, John Allan, from whom he would receive his middle name. Poe and his family moved around quite a bit, and at one point he attended grammar school in Irvine, Scotland.
At age 17, Poe set off to the University of Virginia, where he studied languages and gambled copiously. Soon submerged in debt and estranged from his foster father, he quit school and relocated to Boston. Alone and destitute, he joined the U.S. Army. During this time, he released his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems. This forty-page collection saw a modest printing run of fifty copies and garnered almost no acknowledgment.
In 1830, 21-year-old Poe matriculated as a West Point cadet. Within a year, he faced a court-martial for “gross neglect of duty” and was dismissed. Now able to focus on writing, he published several short stories and became the assistant editor of the Southern Literary Messenger, where he gained a reputation as a hard drinker and an even harder critic. Outside of work, he married his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm.
In 1838, Poe published The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, a Gothic sea novel involving such harrowing subjects as mutiny and cannibalism. This book presents unforgettable images of stranded sailors drawing lots to see who gets eaten, vultures feasting on plague-stricken corpses, and strange animals encountered in the Antarctic regions.
Such strange and haunting images are found repeatedly in Poe’s tales. In The Oblong Box, a man brings his wife’s coffin on board a ship. In The Fall of the House of Usher, the angst-ridden main character buries his sister prematurely. In The Pit and the Pendulum, a shackled prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition faces a trenchant pendulum swinging closer and closer.
Poe contended that the ultimate purpose of art was to produce an effect, to stir an artistic emotion within the beholder. Such an emotion would charm the soul and would therefore be akin to a spiritual experience. Many of Poe’s characters produce a complex effect, for they tend to be eccentric, neurotic types found in a peculiar psychological state.
These singular states of mind appear throughout Poe’s shorter works. In The Cask of Amontillado, the narrator is fixated on homicidal vengeance and ends up entombing his enemy in a wine cellar. In The Tell-Tale Heart, the narrator is intractably obsessed with what he perceives as an old man’s evil eye. In The Raven, a distraught reclusive speaker continually asks questions of a raven which can say only “nevermore.”
The cause of Poe’s death has given rise to a number of conjectures, including delirium tremors and rabies. What is known is that the distressed writer was found staggering through the streets of Baltimore, and he was taken to a hospital. Though he never gained enough consciousness to account for how he fell into such a predicament, legend has it that his final words were “Lord help my poor soul.” All medical records pertaining to Poe’s death are missing, and his departure from this world packs all the ominous intrigue of one of his better short stories.
Poe’s most widely circulated obituary was written by a begrudging enemy, Rufus Griswold, who portrayed Poe as a debauched narcotic-fueled monster. This vindictive obit was much of the reason why the name Edgar Allan Poe often stirred images of a drug-crazed poet scrawling bits of verse on absinthe-stained napkins.
More accurately, Poe was an organized, calculating thinker who approached his work with a mathematical precision. He even published an essay, The Philosophy of Composition, in which he sought to demystify the creative process and refute traditional notions of divine inspiration or transcendental thinking. Some, however, suggest that the essay was nothing more than an elaborate hoax, and it is ironic that Poe’s apparent attempt to objectify his work has only added to his allure.
